PRICE REDUCTION: E-Books

Readers,

I have just reduced the prices on all three of my e-books.  For the U.S. Marketplace, pending Amazon's page update, prices will be:

Lineage: A Novel                                                            $2.99 (a reduction of $3.00)
Soldier, Citizen, Settler:  Lineage Series, Book Two     $3.99 (a reduction of $2.00)
Iniquity and Retribution: Lineage Series, Book Three  $4.99 (a reduction of $1.00)

All three e-books are FREE for Kindle Unlimited subscribers.

Unfortunately, because of Amazon's printing and shipping costs, I cannot reduce the prices of the paperback versions.

Globally, the pricing will reflect Amazon's exchange rate for each marketplace.

Book Four Already In The Works!

Book Four of my "Lineage" series is already in the works. The working title is "Wayward Son: Lineage Series, Book Four."

The book is set in the 19th Century, beginning in approximately 1800 on Virginia's Northern Neck. A century later, the main characters' family has migrated west to Missouri and survived the Civil War -- but not without family turmoil. Essentially, this book is a prequel to Chapter Six of my first book, "Lineage: A Novel," the Second Edition of which was released in early May of this year.

I hope you have enjoyed reading my previous books and will look forward to the release of "Wayward Son" sometime next spring.

Today is "R-Day" (Release Day) for "Iniquity and Retribution," Book Three in my "Lineage" series. It is available from Amazon in paperback right now; the e-reader version is in final review before release.

Synopsis:

As a young man, Edward Smith was devoted to his mother, or so everyone thought. When she disappeared, Edward began a downward spiral into the dark abyss of mental illness. In spite of his illness, Edward was a genius with an eidetic memory, and he used those attributes to his own advantage many times throughout his relatively short adult life. He even fought heroically in World War I and earned the nation’s third-highest honor for gallantry in combat. He gets justice in the end for his wrongdoings, but from a very unexpected quarter.

This book, the third in the author’s “Lineage” series, expands on the main characters of Book One (“Lineage: A Novel”), Chapter One.

Library of Congress Control Number -- Book Three

Book Three, "Iniquity and Retribution," has a Library of Congress Control Number.  I took the time with this book to make the front matter and layout have a more professional appearance. That included registration with the Library of Congress to memorialize the book in perpetuity. Unfortunately, Amazon still requires the "imprint" to be "Independently Published," despite me having formed my own company for Maryland Sales and Use Tax purposes. So... I listed the book as "Independently Published" to comply with Amazon's requirements, but then add my Maryland trade name in the line immediately below that. It's all on the "copyright page" in the front matter.

By the way, I am about three mouse clicks away from releasing the book. I need one more of my proofreaders to finish their review, make the updates, and recheck the formatting.

Happy Reading!

Added a Chapter to the Story Line

Well... After reading the story line several times through, I felt I had to add a new Chapter Thirteen... It does ea better job of developing one of the main characters even further.

Also working on the final chapter, so I will post extracts of Chapters Thirteen through Seventeen once that final chapter is written.

Teaser: Chapter Fourteen

Here's a sample paragraph from Chapter Fourteen, "Iniquity and Retribution" --

"The following Monday morning, Myrtle headed off for the city. She got to the depot just before noon and found Phineas Barnaby at his desk doing paperwork. “Mr. Barnaby, I am Myrtle Blanchard, a nurse at the hospital near Jeffersville. I am trying to track down someone who is important to one of my patients, a Mr. Edward Smith.” Myrtle did not let on that she was related to Edward by marriage, because she felt that if she played on her hospital affiliation, she was more likely to get an honest result from Barnaby."

Teaser: Chapter Thirteen

Here's a sample paragraph from "Iniquity and Retribution," Chapter Thirteen:

"Myrtle returned to Jeffersville later that evening and recounted her engagement with Nurse Kleinschmidt to her sister. Millicent did not recognize Sylvia’s name in Myrtle’s retelling of Nurse Kleinschmidt’s story. However, Millicent did remember Edward telling her about an incident where a young woman fell off a cliff in an apparent suicide. This was early in their courtship, while he was still an itinerant preacher; at the time, she simply discounted it as small talk. One thing that Millicent vividly remembered from his story was that the poor young woman’s features were so destroyed by the impact that she was unrecognizable."

TEASER: Chapter Twelve, "Iniquity and Retribution"

Here is a little sample from Chapter Twelve, "Iniquity and Retribution"

"Private Edward Smith was in the third wave of American infantry to go “over the top” into “No-Man’s Land” between the Allied and German lines. As the rolling artillery barrage began, the sounds were deafening, but Edward kept his cool. He fought valiantly, killing several German soldiers when he was part of a detachment that overran a German machine gun emplacement that had been decimating the advancing Allied force."

TEASER: Chapter Eleven, "Iniquity and Retribution"

From "Iniquity and Retribution," Chapter Eleven

"The knowledge of a potential inheritance got Edward’s attention. He assumed that Millicent’s share would be sufficient for them to not have to scrimp and save to buy their vacation cottage in Illinois on the Fox River. Overall, the situation was not as mournful nor as hopeless as Myrtle and Millicent wanted to believe it to be. As long as the will was not contested, the probate process would be relatively quick and painless for those involved."

Teaser: Chapter Ten, "Iniquity and Retribution"

As promised, here is a teaser from the next chapter:

"Each day, the two sisters managed to find something to argue about. One day, it was men and marriage; the next, it was religion or politics. Regardless of the argument, Millicent always seemed to be the most closed-minded and least likely to concede a point to her sister. For her part, Myrtle was always open to new ideas, was very liberal in her views, and felt that society as a whole had a duty to take care of, not penalize, those who were less fortunate. Overall, the constant bickering made the last three weeks of Millicent’s pregnancy quite miserable."

Teaser, "Iniquity and Retribution," Chapters Eight and Nine

After a somewhat extended vacation out of the country, I'm back and writing whenever I get the chance. Book Three of the "Lineage" Series, "Iniquity and Retribution," is progressing towards publication, hopefully within the next 6-8 weeks (maybe sooner!).

Here are teasers from the latest chapters:

Chapter Eight

Millicent’s diatribe went on for a full twenty minutes and sounded more like a sermon than a plea for the parents to take a more active role in their children’s lives. By the time she was finished, nearly everyone in the room – except for her fellow members of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union – were looking down at their shoes in embarrassment. She even managed to weave religion into the talk. “Children who do not attend church with their parents every Sunday become the devil’s playthings.”

Chapter Nine

“Edward, I have some news for you,” Millicent stated matter-of-factly as they readied for bed. “When you return the next time, I think we should start trying to have a baby.”

Enjoy!

TEASER: Book Three, Chapter Seven

Here's something to chew on from Chapter Seven:

"Millicent did not apologize. She knew she was simply keeping to her plan of deceiving or distracting him whenever the subject came up. She was not yet ready to bear children and she wanted to be sure that when she did, they would have the financial wherewithal to support a growing family. Edward was only two weeks into his employment with the Railway Mail Service, not enough time for any tenure to accrue. Since Edward was only going to be there for the weekend before heading out on another mail run, she knew that she could keep up the deception for a short two days."

TEASER: Book Three, Chapter Six

As promised, here is a teaser from Chapter Six of "Iniquity and Retribution":

"As the first week of their marriage drew to a close, the newspapers were full of news about the sinking of the RMS Titanic after it struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic. Carlos F. Hurd,[1] from the St. Louis Times-Dispatch, was the first reporter to file a report on the tragedy. Edward held onto every word written by the eloquent reporter. He was somewhat amused by the fact that so many rich and famous people had been lost in the sinking. Edward also wondered if the Titanic’s sinking was an omen of things to come in his marriage to Millicent."

[1] Carlos Fayette Hurd (1876-1950) was a second cousin, three times removed, of the author. He was aboard the Carpathia, which was responsible for rescuing Titanic’s survivors. He filed the first news story from the Carpathia, after interviewing numerous survivors as the ship steamed back to New York. The story of how he managed to file that first report is legendary, but too lengthy to tell here.

TEASER: Book Three, Chapter Five

"When they were near the center of the square’s vivid floral garden, Edward invited Millicent to sit next to him on the well-maintained park bench. She sat as invited, in a stiff upright posture, folding her hands primly on her lap. Edward once again was confused. Here he was about to ask this woman to marry him and all he was sensing from her was a cold aloofness that did not suggest she was even the slightest bit interested in him."

Book Three / Chapter Four: Teaser

"It was only a matter of minutes before the pressure in Sylvia’s skull had caused irreversible brain damage. She was no longer Sylvia Dickinson. Aside from involuntary breathing and heartbeat, all other brain function and organ function was slowly shutting down as her body relaxed from its final convulsion."

Teaser: Book Three, Chapter Three

As promised, here is a teaser from Chapter Three of "Iniquity and Retribution:"

"Millicent was speechless. She did not know how to respond to what seemed to be a potential romantic approach from a man of marriageable age. Because she had demurred the attention of other possible suitors in the past, and especially while she was away at college, she was inadequately prepared for the sudden and very forthright approach from Edward Smith. She simply looked at him, devoid of all expression on her face."

Book Three: Teasers

An excerpt from Chapter One, "Iniquity and Retribution":

"In reality, the basement of most houses was a scary place. In this house, the coal-fired furnace had ductwork leading everywhere and resembled a mad octopus. When the burner was fired, the front intake grate glowed with an almost sinister grin. The floor was packed with high silicate sand and it sometimes smelled like it had been used for a toilet more than once to avoid a trip to the outhouse on a cold winter night, before the house was fitted with running water and a flush toilet."

From Chapter Two:

"Edward’s memory of that night started with his mother’s phone calls to his Uncle James and their then-neighbor, Nancy Gibson. In both of those calls, Edward distinctly remembered his mother telling them that she had shot her husband. Even so, Edward tried to recall other memories from that night. He wanted the anger he felt towards his mother to go away. He wanted to be able to love her like a good son should. He wanted Harold Arkwright to disappear and for his father to come back."

Watch this  space for excerpts from each chapter as Book Three of the Lineage Series takes shape over the next few months.

e-Books: PRICE REDUCED!

For Amazon Prime Days, I reduced the price of my e-books to $5.99. This price will remain as the e-reader price for my two current books. They are both eligible for Kindle Unlimited subscribers to download. As Matchbooks, the Kindle version is free with the purchase of the paperback version.

Brand Identification

There is more than one Michael Hurd publishing books on Amazon...  I would ideally like to change my entire presence to "Michael Paul Hurd" to avoid confusion with the other contemporary "Michael Hurd" authors. One has written a number of books about sports. There's another one (a Ph. D.) with books on therapy, and yet a third who has written books on choral music.

HOWEVER... it's not as easy to change as it would seem. I can certainly change the authorship on future books and even changing it on past books is do-able. Alas, Amazon will not let me change my author name to anything other than what I originally registered without starting all over again.

My "brand identification" will have to be through the "Lineage" series itself.

Teaser #2: Draft Cover for Book Three

Of course, it could change before publication...

TEASER: Book Three, Iniquity and Retribution

No, there aren't any spoilers here... but I will say that Book Three, Iniquity and Retribition, will be a radical departure from the historical sequencing in Books One and Two.

Book Three starts in the 1890's, following the "unsolved" murder of Emil Smith (Book One, Chapter One). I say "unsolved" because the investigators of the time focused on who they believed the perpetrators to be, rather than investigating the realms of possibility that did not involve Ophelia Smith and Franklin Emery.

The REAL killer, Edward Smith, eventually grows up... and let's just say that the book will take a macabre' turn as his character is further developed through the narrative.

For those who can't wait for the next volume to be published, be patient. The research into the forensics of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries is taking a considerable amount of time.

Regardless, while you are waiting for Book Three (anticipated publication in October, 2019), please read the other two books!

Enjoy!

First Two Books Are Out There...

So... here I am after writing two full-length books. Not a lot of energy left for blogging about the experience, but one thing I will say is that one of the most satisfying things I have experienced is hitting the <PUBLISH> button on Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing. I do know that the process can be time-consuming, especially if you want to publish in paperback. Anyway, my books are listed with Amazon and available for purchase ( https://amazon.com/author/hurdm )

If you are a student of genealogy and history, my books are efforts to lay my family tree against events in history -- as if the family members actually participated in the historical situation. I chose only those events where there was a connection to the family. Once I established those connections, I had to dig deep to determine the social climates of each period, the family dynamics, and even the applicable gender roles. Of course, I took some liberties with names and places -- as I did not want even a casual researcher to be able to identify the specific family member or location. Some of my relatives who have read the book have figured things out, but I did not spoon-feed them with the details.

Book Three was already a concept before Book Two was finished, thanks to some input from a cousin that I have not even met. That cousin is the last survivor of his generation that has hands-on experience with some of the events portrayed in that book.

As I work through writing more volumes in the "Lineage" series, I welcome open and frank discussion about the books and encourage your feedback on Amazon. One thing I will not tolerate in my discussions is hateful commentary or irrational arguments.
